I engaged Sasha to provide legal advice to me as executor for my sister's estate. My sister died unexpectedly and the estate included a business and a number of properties, so it was not a simple estate. There were a series of complications which added to the stress of being thrust, unprepared, into the role of executor. 

I believe that Sasha was the reason I was able to settle the estate in less than a year. She provided very clear legal advice on what my responsibilities were and how best to fulfil them. She made sure I was aware of deadlines and she handled the application for probate of the will and various public notices that had to be filed. She liaised with the accountant working on the estate tax filings. She assisted with the transfer/sale of the properties and the business. When the estate was closed, she provided advice on what papers I had to retain for a period of time.

My brother died rather suddenly and unexpectedly. He had told me he had a will in his safe and that I was his executrix – information I thought I wouldn't need for years. When he passed away, it was overwhelming. And he lived in BC, and I live in Alberta. I thought this might be a problem, but Sasha made it easy.

Together, we worked through the huge amount of details, government agencies, banks and other agencies involved in closing down someone's life. It was a relief that I wasn't alone in the process. Sasha was great at communicating every step of the way, and answered all the questions I had. Having her guide me in dealing with the institutions and agencies involved made the process much more seamless. When I wasn't receiving any response from one financial/investment agency, I asked Sasha to contact them. They got right back to me after that.

Although the estate isn't completely finished as I am waiting for a Tax Clearance Certificate from Canada Revenue Agency, that is the only piece that is left. It is a great relief that I have gotten a more normal life back and most of the estate has been wrapped up. My mother, who had been living with me for the last five years of her life, died a few months before her 90th birthday, and a few months before the onset of the pandemic in 2020. I felt rather daunted by the prospect of being her executor during that complicated time, particularly as it was my first experience in this role.
