Dealing with a death is difficult and time-consuming

Most executors have no idea what's involved in carrying out the job of executor of a will until their loved one has died. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal time to learn all the steps, timelines, and forms needed to get a grant of probate for an estate and finish this complicated job. At Probate Ally, we can guide you through this process.

About Probate Ally

We want to be your ally

We turn grieving family members and close friends into competent executors; we help them apply to the court for a “grant of probate” (an official document confirming the executor's authority to act and that the will is legally valid); and we equip them with a simple and practical checklist to finish the job painlessly, properly, and efficiently.

Advice personalized for you

No two estates are the same. No two executors are the same. Whether you’d like us to guide you step by step through a grant of probate or just want a little help with your court forms, we can work with you.

We remove barriers so you can get the job done right

We're a virtual law firm licensed in British Columbia. If you need a grant of probate in BC, we can help you wherever you live and accommodate your busy schedule. This means you can save time and money.

Agreed cost up front so you know what to expect from start to finish

We don’t want you to worry that you’re going to get a big legal bill from us. This is why we don’t charge by the hour, we don’t take a percentage of the estate’s total value, and we don’t charge any hidden fees. Before we start working with you, we’ll agree on the cost of our help.

Our 4 Core Services

1. Get a Grant of Probate (Or Grant of Administration if There's No Will)

Whether your loved one left a will or not, we can help with the legal process of settling their estate. We'll help you navigate the probate process, including applying to the court for an "estate grant" (also called a "grant of probate" or a "grant of administration"). We'll also give you advice on tasks that typically happen after you get the estate grant.

2. Do You Just Need a Little Help?

Have you done most of the work yourself but need some specific advice to get the job done for a grant of probate? We can help you. We'll agree with you up front on what we're helping you with.

3. Complications

No two estates are the same. There are many factors that can create complications. We will ask you questions to figure out what makes your situation unique and potentially more complicated and time-consuming. You decide what you want our help with.

4. Post-Grant Help

Getting the grant of probate (or grant of administration) is a big hurdle, but is not your only job. One of the major duties of an executor is that you must account for all the money and assets you have handled in this role. It's important to be thinking of this responsibility right from the first day you start your work as executor. We can help.

About Sasha Nowicki

Sasha Nowicki - Founder & Principal Lawyer, Probate Ally Law Corporation

Founder & Lawyer

I'm the founder and principal lawyer behind Probate Ally, a law firm based in British Columbia. I've been a lawyer for over 20 years, having worked in a large national law firm, a medium sized firm, and now my own small firm.

When my mother-in-law died unexpectedly, I saw how hard it was for my husband and his sister to be suddenly responsible for taking care of her estate while trying to process their sudden loss. Neither of them was prepared for the job or had any experience with the responsibilities of an executor. If I didn't have years of experience helping executors, I would have been just as confused and overwhelmed as they were. I was grateful to ease their administrative burden so they could focus on grieving. This is why I started Probate Ally – to offer personalized support and care for families like my husband's.

I've helped executors from all walks of life, including:

  • accountants, administrative assistants, business owners, carpenters, doctors, farmers, financial advisors, lawyers, loggers, pharmacists, retirees, teachers, and truck drivers;
  • spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and parents;
  • professionals who work for trust companies that have been appointed executor; and
  • executors who live outside of British Columbia.

"Sasha was an amazing partner through our probate process!"

Sasha was an amazing 'partner' through our probate process! Her very reasonable flat fee provided cost certainty. Her incredibly personalized and knowledgeable answers/advice and shared accounting/distribution form templates were so appreciated (and I'm a CPA, still very helpful!). And when our other co-executor unexpectedly became too sick to continue, Sasha was an exceptional resource and so dedicated to helping get us into new sole executor status, including putting the house back on the market the right way, and quickly, so we did not lose out on the spring rush....

"I recommend Sasha without hesitation"

"Sasha was an amazing partner through our probate process!"

"Sasha was an amazing partner through our probate process!"

I engaged Sasha to provide legal advice to me as executor for my sister's estate. My sister died unexpectedly and the estate included a business and a number of properties, so it was not a simple estate. There were a series of complications which added to the stress of being thrust, unprepared, into the role of executor.

I believe that Sasha was the reason I was able to settle the estate in less than a year. She provided very clear legal advice on what my responsibilities were and how best to fulfil them....

Where's our phone number?

You'll notice that we don't provide a phone number. At Probate Ally, online video calls are our preferred method of communicating with you. We find it most productive this way, and here on our website we make it fast and easy for you to book a meeting. Using our calendar, just pick a day and time that works for both of us!

We like online meetings because video provides the benefit of being able to see each other's expressions and reactions, in addition to being able to hear what we're each saying. Interacting with one another face-to-face leads to more natural conversation, collaboration, and trust. And, we believe that meeting this way builds stronger relationships than just talking on the phone. But rest assured, if you're more comfortable just speaking on the phone, we can make arrangements for that too. Just email us: sasha@probateally.ca. We will, however, have to meet virtually (with video) or in-person (if you're local) to confirm your ID, should you choose to become our client. Either way, if you're the executor of a will and need probate for an estate in BC we're looking forward to connecting with you.
